Daeodon

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Daeodon is a genus of prehistoric mammal, a member of the Entelodont family.
The 3 m (10 ft) long animal looked like a giant, monstrous pig, possessing huge jaws with deadly tusks. It was a huge, bone-crushing scavenger and predator, found at Agate Springs Quarry. It had long skull bones under its eyes and bony protrusions on the lower jaw, not dissimilar to the 'warts' of the warthog, which may have supported jaw muscles. The well-known genus Dinohyus ("terrible pig") is now known to have belonged to this genus. Since Daeodon is the earlier name, it has priority.

A member of the feared
entelodonts, daeodon is a common and non-picky omnivore. Daeodon are happy
feeding upon carrion if they cannot find the proper food, or even bone marrow.
If it weren't for their generalist nature, they might not be as tough a neighbor
to life with for humanoids. Crops, livestock, children: a daeodon cares not.
The other real issue with these heavy entelodonts are their ornery nature.
In the heat of the summer, when the wallows begin to scale over with dry ground
and available mud shrinks more and more, fights often break out between males.
Typically, these contests start in intimidation matches, the opponents roaring
and slobbering as they swing their impressive heads side to side. If this
doesn't work, the two will go into combat, grabbing anywhere and everywhere
they can with their crunching maws. Even relatively young daeodon bear scars
on their hides from these combats over water rights.

Combat
The daeodon's common nickname amongst humanoids is "hyena-pig",
and it is easy to see why in combat. A daeodon's typical course of action
is to attempt to trip its opponent to allow easy access for heavy scarring
bites. If this doesn't work, an all-out bull rush and frenzied bite session
occurs.
Trip (Ex): A daeodon that hits with its bite attack can attempt
to trip the opponent (+2 check modifier) as a free action without making a
touch attack or provoking an attack of opportunity. If the attempt fails,
the opponent cannot react to trip the daeodon.
Ferocity (Ex): A daeodon continues to fight without penalty,
even if disabled or dying.
